Superlattice formation dictates the physical properties of many materials, including the nature of the ground state in magnetic materials. Chemical composition is commonly considered to be the primary determinant of superlattice identity, especially in intercalation compounds. Nevertheless, in this work, we find that kinetic control of superlattice growth leads to the coexistence of disparate crystallographic domains within a compositionally perfect single crystal. We demonstrate that Cr1/4TaS2 is a noncollinear antiferromagnet in...

1T–TaS2 is a layered charge density wave (CDW) crystal exhibiting sharp phase transitions and associated resistance changes. These resistance steps could be exploited for information storage, underscoring the importance of controlling and tuning the CDW states. Given the importance of out-of-plane interactions in 1T–TaS2, modulating interlayer interactions by heterostructuring is a promising method for tailoring CDW phase transitions. In this work, we investigate the optical and electronic properties of...

The interplay between symmetry and topology in magnetic materials makes it possible to engineer exotic phases and technologically useful properties. A key requirement for these pursuits is achieving control over local crystallographic and magnetic structure, usually through sample morphology (such as synthesis of bulk crystals versus thin films) and application of magnetic or electric fields. Here we show that V1/3NbS2 can be crystallized in two ordered superlattices, distinguished by the periodicity of out-of-plane magnetic...

How the facilitates chromatin transcription (FACT) complex enables RNA polymerase II to overcome chromatin barriers in cells remains poorly understood—especially given the limited direct interactions of FACT with polymerases, DNA or nucleosomes. Here we demonstrate that phase separation, mediated by nucleosome destabilizing factor (NDF), is a key mechanism enabling the function of FACT during transcription elongation. Through biochemical and single-molecule assays, we found that NDF−FACT condensates create specialized biochemical environments that enhance transcription efficiency...

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis RNA polymerase (MtbRNAP) is the target of the first-line anti-tuberculosis inhibitor rifampin; however, the emergence of rifampin resistance necessitates the development of new antibiotics. Here, we communicate the first single-molecule characterization of MtbRNAP elongation and its inhibition by three diverse small-molecule inhibitors: N(α)-aroyl-N-aryl-phenylalaninamide (D-IX216), streptolydigin (Stl), and pseudouridimycin (PUM) using high-resolution optical tweezers. Compared to Escherichia coli RNA polymerase (EcoRNAP), MtbRNAP transcribes more slowly,...

The ability to understand and ultimately control the transformations and properties of various nanoscale systems, from proteins to synthetic nanomaterial assemblies, hinges on the ability to uncover their dynamics on their characteristic length and time scales. Here, we use MHz X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) to directly elucidate the characteristic microsecond-dynamics of density fluctuations of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), not only in a colloidal dispersion but also in a liquid phase consisting of densely packed, yet mobile, NCs with no long-range order. We find...

Microdroplets are purported to enhance reaction rates and produce spontaneous chemical transformations that are unfavorable in macroscale systems. The gas–liquid interface is widely implicated for the emergence of these chemical anomalies. Experiments conducted on individual microdroplets provide a unique platform for studying interfacial effects while bypassing transport limitations often encountered in macroscopic systems. We investigate such interfacial effects by analyzing the suppression of the I− + O3...

Electron transfer (ET) reactions underpin energy conversion and chemical transformations in both biological and abiological systems. The efficiency of any ET process relies on achieving a desired ET rate within an optimal driving force range. Marcus theory provides a microscopic framework for understanding the activation free energy, and thus the rate, of ET in terms of a key parameter: the reorganization energy. For electrified solid-liquid interfaces, it has long been conventionally understood that only factors in the electrolyte phase are responsible for determining the...

A theory for diffusion-controlled reactions within nonequilibrium steady states

2025

We study diffusion-controlled processes in nonequilibrium steady states, where standard rate theory assumptions break down. Using transition path theory, we generalize the relations between reactive probability fluxes and measures of the rate of the reaction. Stochastic thermodynamics analysis reveals how work constrains the enhancement of rates relative to their equilibrium values. An analytically solvable ion pairing model under a strong electric field illustrates and validates our approach and theory. These findings provide deeper insights into diffusion-controlled reaction...
