Berkeley Supervisor: Graham Fleming

Cambridge host: Jenny Zhang

Kyle completed his undergraduate degree in Nanoscience: Physics and Chemistry of Advanced Materials at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland  in 2017. During this time he became particularly interested in technologies for renewable energy, in particular solar energy. In 2018 he  began a PhD at Trinity College, University of Cambridge with Professor Sam Stranks at the Cavendish Laboratory studying new materials  for high performance, low-cost solar panels. Using advanced microscopy techniques, Kyle studied the complex nanoscale landscape of halide-perovskites to learn how the small-scale disorder affects large-scale performance. Having submitted his thesis at the end of 2022, Kyle’s  current research focuses on microscopic measurements of solar cells under operation to understand degradation mechanisms and improve  their long-term stability. Kyle’s Berkeley project is to developing a multimodal microscopy toolbox to track ions in electrochemical devices.
