Xiang Zhang, a senior faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Materials Sciences Division, has been appointed the 16th president and vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong. The five-year appointment was announced Dec. 15 by the University of Hong Kong. Zhang served as director of the Materials Sciences Division from 2014 to 2016, and is currently the Ernest Kuh Endowed Chair Professor of Engineering at UC Berkeley, and the director of the National Science Foundation Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center at UC Berkeley. Zhang is recognized for his leading research in nanophotonics, nanoengineering, and metamaterials.
